'XM3 HEV Trend' What Makes Renault Korea Hybrid Different?

As the domestic hybrid (HEV) car market rapidly grows, the XM3 HEV is leading Renault Korea Motors' sales expansion. Since October last year, Renault Korea has added a hybrid model to the compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) XM3. It has been recognized for its product competitiveness not only in the domestic market but also in export markets.

The XM3 HEV is equipped with Renault Group's long-developed E-Tech hybrid technology. Renault Korea's hybrid technology is differentiated from competitors by its multi-mode gearbox.

The XM3 hybrid features a dual motor system consisting of a drive electric motor (36kW·205Nm) and an HSG auxiliary motor (15kW·50Nm) that also functions as a generator. The clutchless multi-mode gearbox is a device that helps the 1.6 gasoline engine and motor, optimized for hybrid use, deliver balanced driving performance.

The multi-mode gearbox was developed by Renault Group, inspired by and incorporating technology from the Renault F1 team. This gearbox contains 150 patented technologies. The multi-mode gearbox can be considered an E-Tech exclusive transmission. It combines 4 engine gears and 2 electric motor gears. The two electric motor gears allow for a much wider variety of gear combinations. Notably, it can start and depart in full electric mode at all times, providing responsiveness similar to a pure electric vehicle.

When shifting gears, the HSG auxiliary motor intervenes. The HSG auxiliary motor is a crucial component that controls the engine's rpm and matches the rotational speed difference before and after shifting. Its advantage lies in enabling smoother and faster gear shifts while suppressing noise and shock. Renault officials explain that the role of the HSG and the smart gear shifting of the multi-mode gearbox create a unique driving sensation exclusive to Renault hybrids.

Additionally, the multi-mode gearbox is characterized by its very light weight, under 50kg, and compact size. It is the result of concentrated know-how and technology accumulated by Renault over a long time in F1. Thanks to this, it enables more dynamic driving compared to competing models.

The XM3 hybrid received the Hybrid SUV of the Year award from the Korea Automobile Journalists Association earlier this year, marking its third cumulative award. Previously, since its first launch in Korea, the XM3 won the Compact SUV of the Year and Design awards. A Renault Korea official stated, "The XM3 E-Tech hybrid is evaluated as the hybrid closest to an electric vehicle based on its technology," adding, "You can experience top-level technology."
