Mokpo National University and Muan County Begin Urban Regeneration Project 추진

Muan-gun Cheonggye-myeon Urban Regeneration Strategy Establishment Seminar Held

National Mokpo University (President Song Ha-cheol) hosted the ‘Cheonggye-myeon Urban Regeneration Strategy Seminar’ organized by the Cheonggye-myeon Urban Regeneration Promotion Support TFT on the 27th at 3 p.m. in the Jeongsangmuk International Conference Room of Mokpo University’s 70th Anniversary Hall.

According to Mokpo University on the 28th, about 100 people attended the seminar, including Mokpo University President Song Ha-cheol, Muan County Governor Kim San, Muan County Council Chairman Kim Kyung-hyun, local residents, Mokpo University students, and faculty and staff.


The seminar featured expert presentations on the topics of △The New Government’s Urban Regeneration Policy Direction (Han Seung-heon, Committee Member of the Korea Standard Association Urban Innovation Center) and △Cheonggye-myeon Urban Regeneration Activation Strategy Planning (Professor Lee Jin-hyung of Mokpo University’s Department of Tourism Management).


Committee Member Han Seung-heon, who gave the keynote speech, emphasized that “the new government’s urban regeneration policy has shifted toward strengthening the self-sustaining capacity of local communities, which is National Task No. 119, and that there is a need to consider the management of project sites after the termination of national funding.”


Following this, Professor Lee Jin-hyung of Mokpo University’s Department of Tourism Management proposed strategies for activating urban regeneration in Cheonggye-myeon, including operating the Cheonggye Commercial District Development Center, holding alley festivals in collaboration between Mokpo University and the merchants’ association, creating the Cheonggye Anchor Store as a complex cultural space, implementing the Cheonggye Public Art Project, establishing spaces for youth entrepreneurship and networking, and developing walkable alleyways in Cheonggye.


The subsequent discussion session was chaired by Kang Shin-gyeom, Dean Emeritus of the Graduate School of Culture at Chonnam National University, with panelists including Lee Jin-ui, Team Leader of the Jeollanam-do Urban Regeneration Support Center; Baek Chang-seong, Head of the Regional Development Division of Muan County; Lee Yoon-jung, Chair of the Rural Area Regeneration Research Committee of the Korean Urban Regeneration Society; and Professor Jung Nam-sik of Mokpo University’s Department of Urban and Regional Development. They exchanged diverse opinions and engaged in discussions on urban regeneration in Cheonggye-myeon, Muan County.


Meanwhile, since January, Mokpo University has formed the ‘Cheonggye-myeon Urban Regeneration Promotion Support TFT’ composed of university experts in relevant fields to promote mutual development between the region and the university, working closely with Muan County on urban regeneration.


Professor Lee Jin-hyung, Chair of the TFT and of Mokpo University’s Department of Tourism Management, stated, “This seminar was a meaningful opportunity to spread consensus on the necessity of urban regeneration in Cheonggye-myeon, Muan County, and to explore ways for mutual growth between the university and the region. We will continue to cooperate organically with Muan County to consider and communicate the direction for activating urban regeneration in Cheonggye-myeon.”
