Ulsan City Selected as Disaster Safety 'Drone Demonstration City'... Collaboration Among 15 Local Governments

Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Signs Agreement with 4 Metropolitan and 11 Basic Local Governments

Agrees to Collaborate on Drone Utilization Model Demonstration and Result Sharing

Boost for Ulsan's Key Project 'Urban Air Mobi

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), along with 4 metropolitan governments and 11 local governments, totaling 15 municipalities, will promote the ‘Drone Demonstration City’ construction project.

Ulsan City announced on the 28th at 10 a.m. at the Sejong National Research Complex that 15 municipalities selected for the ‘2023 Drone Demonstration City Construction Project,’ including Ulsan, will sign a joint cooperation agreement with MOLIT.

Under the supervision of the Aviation Safety Technology Institute of MOLIT, this public contest project, which began in February, received applications from about 40 municipalities. Four special/metropolitan municipalities?Seoul, Ulsan, Incheon, and Jeju?and 11 local municipalities including Gimcheon, Jeonju, and Seongnam were selected.

According to the joint cooperation agreement, the municipalities will demonstrate drone utilization models tailored to their characteristics from April to November for eight months and share the results.

In the case of Ulsan City, the plan is to carry out five detailed projects aimed at establishing a ‘Ulsan-type disaster safety city.’

The main project contents include ▲delivery of heavy (50kg) protective equipment in preparation for nuclear power plant accidents ▲altitude-based radiation measurement monitoring ▲demonstration of jamming drones to counter unauthorized swarm drone (3 or more units) terrorism ▲search and rescue of missing persons in Yeongnam Alps linked with a reporting app and control center, among four detailed projects.

Additionally, an ▲advanced disaster safety hyper-connected AI control system capable of integrated control will be developed.

A total project budget of 1.6 billion KRW (1 billion KRW national funds, 300 million KRW city funds, 300 million KRW county funds) will be invested, and the project will be carried out near the nuclear power plant in Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun, and in drone special deregulation zones (Cheongnyang, Sangbuk).

Ulsan City will lead the project, with participation from Ulju-gun, Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency, SK Telecom Co., Ltd., Vololand Co., Ltd., AMP Co., Ltd., MMP Co., Ltd., Aero Research Co., Ltd., Prenew Co., Ltd., and Genosoft Co., Ltd., totaling 10 institutions and companies.

Ulsan City expects early commercialization by applying the demonstration results on-site, as the necessity and demand for this project are clear.

Since the drone industry forms the foundation of Ulsan City’s key project, Urban Air Mobility (UAM), related project promotion is also expected to gain momentum.
