Best-Selling 40-Inch OLED TVs... LGD Manufacturing the Panels

Strengthening Lineup with 45-inch Ultra Wide and 27-inch Gaming Panels

Despite the global TV demand contraction, 40-inch OLED TVs are selling well. LG Display, the only company in the world producing OLED TV panels, is responding to the growing demand by expanding its 40-inch lineup.

According to market research firm Omdia, the sales volume of 40-inch OLED TVs reached 1,168,500 units last year. This represents a 25% increase compared to 949,000 units in 2021. This is a significant growth amid an overall TV sales decline of about 5% due to inflation and the Russia-Ukraine war.

In particular, the share of OLED among premium 40-inch TVs priced over $1,000 surged from 17% in 2020 to 57% in 2021, and then to 89% in 2022. This indicates that OLED has pushed out LCDs and secured a competitive edge in the premium TV market.

40-inch OLED TVs are especially popular among gamers as their size is suitable for use on a table. Omdia forecasts that sales of 40-inch OLED TVs will continue to grow from 1.33 million units this year to 1.38 million in 2024, 1.45 million in 2025, and 1.62 million in 2026.

Currently, LG Display is the sole producer of 40-inch OLED TV panels. Using these panels, many global TV brands such as LG Electronics, Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, and Toshiba offer products.

Last year, LG Display expanded customer choices by adding a 42-inch panel following the existing 48-inch. This year, they further strengthened their mid-size lineup by introducing two new OLED panels: a 45-inch ultra-wide and a 27-inch gaming panel. These panels maintain OLED’s excellent picture quality while delivering industry-leading response times, a high refresh rate of 240Hz, and reduced light reflection, providing overwhelming gaming performance.

OLED TVs, where each pixel emits its own light, offer infinite contrast ratios that produce clear and three-dimensional picture quality, the fastest response times among current panels, and a wide variable refresh rate range. These outstanding features make them well-suited for console gaming and high-spec PC gaming.

An LG Display representative stated, "We plan to strengthen OLED leadership in the high-end market with panels that apply Meta Technology, improving brightness (screen luminance) by 60% and viewing angle by up to 30% compared to previous models." Meta Technology combines ultra-fine lenses that maximize organic light emission with brightness enhancement algorithms. It is the brightest OLED TV panel currently available and improves energy efficiency by 22%.
