Kolon Industries Petroleum Resin, First in Korea to Obtain 'International Eco-Friendly Certification'

Proving the Sustainability of Carbon Reduction Products

Kolon Industries announced on the 27th that it has obtained the 'ISCC PLUS' certification, the first international eco-friendly certification in the domestic industry, for three of its petroleum resin products. With this certification, the company plans to expand its green portfolio in petrochemical materials and accelerate ESG management.

The products certified by Kolon Industries are ▲C5 petroleum resin ▲C9 petroleum resin ▲hydrogenated petroleum resin. These are all petroleum resin products produced at the Ulsan plant. C5 and C9 petroleum resins are mainly used in industrial adhesives, while hydrogenated petroleum resin is primarily used in adhesives for hygiene products and tire additives.

The ISCC PLUS certification is an internationally recognized indicator that verifies the sustainability of carbon-reduced products and is granted when eco-friendly raw materials and substances are used in the production process. It is considered one of the most trusted certification systems worldwide as it complies with the European Union (EU) Renewable Energy Directive. It is characterized by tracking and managing sustainability standards across the entire supply chain, from raw materials to materials and finished products.

Building on this certification, Kolon Industries plans to gradually expand the ISCC PLUS certification to petroleum resin products produced at its Yeosu and Daesan plants this year, focusing on internalizing ESG management.

Park Jun-hyo, Head of Business Division 5, which oversees the petroleum resin business, said, “By replacing the existing fossil fuel-based naphtha with eco-friendly raw materials, we have opened the way to supply sustainable petroleum resins to our customers.” He added, “As the number one petroleum resin manufacturer in Korea, we will contribute to achieving the company-wide goal of ‘2040 Net Zero’ and establishing a circular economy value chain through differentiation in petrochemical materials in the era of mandatory environmental responsibility.”
