5·18 Foundation "No Official Communication Received Yet"

Meeting with May 18 Groups on 27th... Official Contact Also Expected

Recently, Woo Won, the grandson of the late Jeon Du-hwan who exposed allegations of corruption within his family, expressed his intention to apologize by meeting with the bereaved families of the Gwangju 5·18 Democratization Movement, causing tension among the 5·18 organizations.

On the 26th, Woo Won posted on his SNS a flight ticket itinerary showing departure from the United States on the 27th and arrival in Korea on the morning of the 28th, along with a message stating that he would immediately go to Gwangju upon arrival to meet with those involved in the 5·18 movement and apologize.

He also stated, "I don't know anything and don't know where to go to meet the bereaved families. Please help me."

Given the situation, officials from the 5·18 organizations are on high alert. However, according to a source, Woo Won has not officially contacted them yet.

Jo Jin-tae, Executive Director of the 5·18 Memorial Foundation, said, "I have seen Woo Won's post, but since we have not received an official meeting request, we still need to verify the authenticity of the post. Due to the time difference with the United States, we expect Woo Won's side to contact us around the 27th Korean time."

He added, "As soon as dawn breaks, we plan to hold a meeting with the related 5·18 organizations."

Previously, while staying in the United States, Woo Won revealed himself as Jeon Du-hwan's grandson and exposed allegations of slush funds and corruption within the family through SNS and media interviews. He also stated that his grandfather (Jeon Du-hwan) was not a hero but a mass murderer, and that his family was living a luxurious life with black money obtained through money laundering.

On the 17th, during a live broadcast, he was transported to a hospital after ingesting a large amount of drugs presumed to be narcotics. After recovering and being discharged, he apologized, saying, "My lungs stopped functioning for more than three hours, and my airway was closed. Intubation saved me, and when I opened my eyes, a tube was inserted deep in my throat. I couldn't breathe, and my whole body was covered in bruises. I sincerely apologize for causing trouble with my irresponsible behavior. Don't worry, this will never happen again."
