Insufficient 8.32 Million Won Medical Expenses
Compensation Also Demanded from Thailand Tourism Authority
A tourist who was bungee jumping in Pattaya, Thailand, fell after the rope wrapped around his ankle snapped. Fortunately, the tourist miraculously survived.
On the 23rd (local time), foreign media such as CNN and the New York Post reported footage of the bungee jumping fall accident involving a Hong Kong tourist that occurred in Pattaya, Thailand, last January. The height from which the tourist jumped was equivalent to a 10-story building.
As he jumped and descended, the rope suddenly snapped just as he was about to rebound and ascend again, causing the man to fall directly into the water. Fortunately, it was not a hard surface, and since the rope broke just before he hit the water, the man survived without serious injuries.
The man explained to CNN, "It was really high, so I tightly closed my eyes the moment I fell. I was going to open them when my body went back up, but I realized I was falling into the water." He added that he landed on his left side, which caused more severe injuries.
Because his lower body was tied for the bungee jump, the man had to swim desperately. He said, "If someone didn't know how to swim, it would have been extremely dangerous." The impact when hitting the water caused bruises all over his body and other injuries.
The bungee jumping company stated, "This is the first time something like this has happened. He signed a waiver related to the accident before doing the bungee jump."
The company reportedly compensated 500 Hong Kong dollars (about 82,000 KRW) for the bungee jump fee and 1,800 Hong Kong dollars (about 296,000 KRW) for medical expenses, totaling 2,300 Hong Kong dollars (about 380,000 KRW).
However, the injured man is demanding compensation from the Thailand Tourism Authority and the company, saying the compensation amount is far insufficient compared to the 50,000 Hong Kong dollars (about 8.32 million KRW) he paid for medical treatment.
