The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism held a meeting on the 24th to listen to on-site opinions by meeting with stakeholders in the popular music industry.
The meeting was held at the Copyright Protection Division Seoul Office, presided over by Jeon Byeong-geuk, the first vice minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Attendees included Kim Tae-ho, COO of HYBE; Kim Ji-won, Head of Marketing Center at SM Entertainment; Lee Ju-yong, General Leader of YG Entertainment; Kim Sang-ho, Executive Director of JYP Entertainment; and Lim Hee-seok, Head of Music IP Business Division at CJ ENM, who discussed development plans for the music industry to enable a new leap forward for K-pop.
The Ministry explained that although the popular music industry has been continuously pushing into the North and South American and European markets recently, there is some recognition of a crisis as K-pop’s growth momentum is slowing down, with exports to Southeast Asia decreasing. Vice Minister Jeon said, "Recently, various changes have occurred in the domestic music industry, leading to many expectations, concerns, and suggestions regarding the development direction of K-pop," and emphasized, "The government will also make greater efforts for the sustainable growth of the K-pop industry, which is Korean content representing the country worldwide, including preparing a 'Music Industry Re-Leap Strategy.'"
