Haenam-gun 'No One Illiterate'...Significant Strengthening of Adult Literacy Education

Establishment of Literacy Schools Recognized for Elementary Education Starting Next Year

Haenam-gun's 'Kkumbobae School,' a school where elderly people who had no opportunity to learn can dream and study, has opened energetically again this year.

According to the county on the 24th, the adult literacy education program 'Kkumbobae School' began operating in 13 eup and myeon areas from the 14th.

Starting with 30 learners at 3 locations in 2018, Kkumbobae School now has 152 learners participating this year.

The learning locations have also expanded to 47 classrooms across 13 eup and myeon areas, including the Lifelong Learning Center in Haenam-eup.

Kkumbobae School offers Korean language education focusing on reading and writing, which have been the greatest inconveniences in daily life, as well as subjects such as art, music, and mathematics.

In addition, in response to the digital transformation era, the school plans to provide digital literacy education closely related to daily life, such as smartphone usage and kiosk operation, tailored to learners' levels.

Especially, in addition to residents in eup areas who can attend classes at the Lifelong Learning Center, the school also conducts visiting education for learners with mobility difficulties or those living in myeon areas, providing a second chance for education to county residents with limited transportation.

Beyond being a simple place of learning, Kkumbobae School has established itself as a space that soothes the regret of elderly learners who missed educational opportunities for various reasons and offers the joy of learning.

With the passion for learning of late learners, last year three individuals won awards at the national and Jeonnam adult literacy poetry and painting contests, and 70 literacy education graduates held a meaningful ceremony with exhibitions of their works such as poetry, diaries, and letters.

Haenam-gun plans to establish a literacy school recognized for elementary academic achievement early next year to build a stable learning environment and establish a systematic educational foundation.

Currently, preparations are underway to improve facilities within the Lifelong Learning Center and expand the curriculum, aiming for official literacy school designation early next year.

A county official said, “We expect that providing quality Korean language and various education to adults eager to learn will make their lives more enjoyable and convenient,” adding, “We will create a lifelong learning environment where no one is excluded from learning and continuously discover and operate various lifelong learning policies.”
