Ministry of Science and ICT and Korea Post Headquarters Announce on the 24th
The Post Office Courier Union has decided to carry out a full-day strike on the 25th, prompting the government to prepare countermeasures.
The Ministry of Science and ICT's Postal Service Headquarters announced on the 24th that, with the National Courier Labor Union Post Office Headquarters warning of a full-day strike on the 25th, it will prepare and implement measures to ensure uninterrupted postal services.
Delivery workers and on-site post office staff will come to work to handle the backlog caused by the strike. Additionally, since the ongoing partial strike is likely to continue for a long time, the volume of parcel mail delivered by delivery workers will be increased, and on-site personnel support will be provided to maintain a stable delivery service system.
Since the courier union declared a strike on the 14th, about 800 union members have participated daily. The parcels, including fresh food, that they refused to deliver account for about 1% of the total delivery volume.
The headquarters stated, "The courier union is conducting malicious forms of industrial action by selectively refusing high-volume, heavy parcels and deliveries to distant or inconvenient locations, disregarding the safety of delivery workers who deliver by motorcycle. The 'commission system adjustment' was withdrawn during this negotiation process, so it is an issue to be discussed in next year's wage agreement, yet they are still misleading the public and union members as if the commission system is being adjusted immediately."
They added, "The courier union must immediately stop refusing medium and large parcel deliveries that use delivery workers' safety as leverage, and withdraw unrealistic demands to guarantee last year's volume per post office, which was high due to COVID-19 and strikes at some courier companies. We will do our best to ensure that the public experiences no inconvenience when using the post office."
