Close Associates Who Helped Doich Motors Stock Manipulator Escape Receive Suspended Sentence in Second Trial

The Seoul Central District Court Criminal Appeal Division 1-1 (Presiding Judges Im Jae-hoon, Kim Soo-kyung, Kim Hyung-jak) on the 23rd sentenced three people including A (50), who were indicted for aiding a criminal's escape, to six months in prison with a two-year suspended sentence, the same as in the first trial, and ordered 40 hours of community service.

A and others are accused of helping Lee (surname), considered a key figure in the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation case, to flee and go into hiding between September and October 2021.

Lee was under investigation by prosecutors for allegedly participating in stock price manipulation at the request of former Deutsche Motors Chairman Kwon Oh-soo from 2010 to 2012, and fled in September 2021. He also managed Deutsche Motors stocks and securities accounts held by Kim Kun-hee, introduced by former Chairman Kwon.

When Lee was about to flee, he asked A, his subordinate, "Go down to the provinces, make one call to my wife from my cell phone, then leave the phone there and come back." A complied with Lee's request.

Lee's acquaintances B (53) and C (48) also helped him escape by opening anonymous cell phones on his behalf or arranging places to stay. Thanks to their help, Lee, who lived in hiding for over a month, was caught by prosecutors on November 12, 2021.
