The discussion forum, co-hosted with the office of Assemblyman Cho Eung-cheon of the Democratic Party of Korea, was attended by about 50 participants including officials from related organizations and experts in transportation and civil engineering.

The research findings were presented by Kim Young-ho, head of the Mobility Transition Research Division at the Korea Transport Institute and the lead researcher of the project, followed by expert discussions and a Q&A session.

The feasibility study was conducted from November 2021 to January of this year. It analyzed the project feasibility and economic efficiency (B/C) for measures to improve public transportation on Gangbyeonbuk-ro (8.6 km from Gangbyeon Station in Seoul to Suseok IC in Namyangju), where severe congestion occurs during commuting hours. The study concluded that additional road capacity is inevitable to meet the increasing transportation demand in the northeastern metropolitan area, and also suggested the need for plans to expand Gangbyeonbuk-ro or construct an underground road.

Based on the contents reviewed in the study and opinions gathered at the discussion forum, the Metropolitan Transport Commission plans to prepare project implementation plans in consultation with relevant local governments.
