Collection and Incineration of Landfill Gas at Overseas Landfills... Securing Domestic Greenhouse Gas Reduction Performance
The Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corporation will collaborate with SK Ecoplant to develop international greenhouse gas reduction projects in Southeast Asia and South America.
On the 23rd, the Landfill Site Management Corporation announced that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SK Ecoplant on "Cooperation for International Greenhouse Gas Reduction Projects in Response to Climate Change."
According to the agreement, the Landfill Site Management Corporation will utilize its 30 years of accumulated operational know-how and waste resource recovery technology, while SK Ecoplant will leverage its project development capabilities.
The two organizations plan to first pursue projects in South America, including Bolivia and Peru, where large-scale landfill gas collection is expected to be possible, and then expand to Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand.
The Landfill Site Management Corporation aims to secure domestic greenhouse gas reduction achievements by collecting and incinerating landfill gas from overseas waste landfills through public-private cooperation.

Lee Gyuseong, Acting President of the Landfill Site Management Corporation, stated, "The government must secure 37.5 million tons of overseas reduction achievements by 2030 to meet the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for greenhouse gas reduction," adding, "We will actively respond through public-private cooperation."
Lee Daehyuk, Head of SK Ecoplant Global Eco BU, said, "SK Group has set a goal to contribute to reducing 1% of the global carbon reduction target by 2030," and added, "We plan to continuously invest in international greenhouse gas reduction projects to achieve our carbon emission reduction targets."
Meanwhile, the Landfill Site Management Corporation was designated by the government last December as the dedicated agency for international greenhouse gas reduction projects in the waste sector and is currently promoting Korea's first international reduction project at the Narangjin Landfill in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
International greenhouse gas reduction projects involve reducing greenhouse gases overseas through technical support, investment, and facility installation, and transferring a portion of the reduction achievements to the Korean government and companies.
