NunuTV Unable to Stream 'The Glory'... Korean Content Removed Amid Illegal Viewing Controversy

Prosecutors and Police Step In, "Victim Accepts"

The illegal online video streaming site 'NunuTV' announced that it will delete all domestic OTT content after facing criticism for unauthorized posting of online video service (OTT) content.

NunuTV, which has servers in the Dominican Republic, announced on the 23rd through a notice titled "Notice of Deletion of All Domestic OTT/Original Series Materials" that "all videos related to domestic OTT/original series, which have recently become an issue on NunuTV, will be deleted in bulk."

The deletion targets include all domestic original series such as Wavve, Coupang Play, Watcha, TVING, KT Season, and others. However, there was no mention of overseas content such as Netflix or Disney+.

NunuTV stated, "We somewhat acknowledge the damage to domestic OTTs," and added, "We will not process any material requests related to domestic OTT content."

It further stated, "The exact timing of deletion has not been decided, but all materials are expected to be deleted within this week," and "We will also strengthen copyright protection for domestic internet content services and apply filtering."

Established in 2001, NunuTV is an illegal streaming site for pirated videos with servers located in the Dominican Republic and other locations.

Broadcasting and film distributors and the online video service (OTT) industry recently formed a video copyright protection council to jointly respond to copyright infringement. The council filed a criminal complaint against NunuTV on the 9th, and the Busan Police Agency's Cyber Crime Investigation Unit began investigating the site operator on the 16th.

Criticism intensified after news spread that the Netflix Korean original series 'The Glory' was being streamed without authorization on NunuTV.

The industry estimates that NunuTV had over 10 million active users last month, a figure comparable to Netflix's 11.51 million domestic users.

The National Assembly also took action. Democratic Party lawmaker Byun Jae-il proposed an amendment to the Information and Communications Network Act to prevent such cases. The amendment aims to eliminate blind spots for illegal sites by imposing obligations on content delivery network (CDN) operators who install cache servers domestically to block access to illegal and harmful information.

Additionally, the Ministry of Science and ICT, which reviews and decides on blocking access to overseas illegal sites, has taken measures such as strengthening URL access blocking.
