Daegu City announced on the 23rd that it will introduce 20 eco-friendly electric city buses and 2 hydrogen city buses this year.
The electric city buses will begin operation in July, and the hydrogen city buses are scheduled to operate from October according to the city bus replacement and retirement schedule.
The city has secured a total project budget of 8.8 billion KRW to protect citizens' health from fine dust, expand mobility rights for transportation-vulnerable groups, and establish a future-oriented transportation system by introducing electric and hydrogen eco-friendly city buses and expanding and building charging infrastructure.
According to Daegu City, dispatching 20 electric city buses on 15 routes will bring the total to 81 buses operating on 23 routes, including the current 61 buses. Three more electric charging facilities will be built, increasing the total to 16 locations including existing facilities.
The city first introduced electric city buses in 2019, which emit no exhaust gases and provide a comfortable ride with reduced vibration and noise inside the vehicle, resulting in high satisfaction among both passengers and drivers.
Along with electric city buses this year, Daegu City plans to introduce a total of 10 hydrogen city buses by 2025, adding 2 more this year following the introduction of 2 units last year. These hydrogen buses emit no pollutants and have a fine dust purification effect.
The introduction of these electric and hydrogen city buses is expected to improve the convenience and operational stability of city bus transportation, contributing to the overall enhancement of public transportation services and establishing a pleasant urban environment and the city’s status as a leading future automobile city.
Chun-sik Bae, Director of the City Transportation Bureau, stated, “We will continue to strive to expand the supply of eco-friendly city buses to improve urban air quality and build a future-oriented eco-friendly transportation system.” He added, “Additionally, we will introduce eco-friendly city buses as low-floor buses to enhance the convenience of public transportation use for transportation-vulnerable groups.”
