Suspicious Photos Spreading Through SNS
Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently claimed that there is a possibility he could be arrested by authorities, and photos depicting him handcuffed and being taken away have been circulating online. However, it has been revealed that all of these are fake photos created using artificial intelligence (AI).
According to foreign media such as AP News and The New York Times on the 22nd (local time), photos accompanied by captions stating "Trump was arrested in Manhattan" have been spreading on social media platforms like Twitter.
The images vary, showing scenes of former President Trump appearing to flee, being surrounded by police officers and handcuffed, and posing in an orange prison inmate uniform inside a jail.
However, upon closer inspection, the police uniforms are distorted and the text in various places is warped. This is because all of these photos are AI-generated fictional images.
Some of the images were confirmed to have been created by Elliot Higgins, founder of the digital investigation group Bellingcat. He wrote on Twitter that he made the photos using the image-generating AI "Midjourney" by inputting simple prompts.
In an interview with AP News, Higgins said, "I created these using the image-generating AI service 'Midjourney'." He added, "Some people believe these are real, but that is due to our education system failing to cultivate critical thinking skills."
In fact, some social media users have been sharing these controversial photos without context, and many are reportedly accepting them as evidence that former President Trump has been arrested.
As the controversy grew, Twitter issued a notice attached to the display of the related photos stating, "The images of Trump's arrest are fake," and clarified, "They were generated by artificial intelligence and have no factual basis."
Former President Trump is currently under investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office in New York for allegations that he paid a settlement with company funds to hide a past sexual relationship with a porn actress just before the 2016 presidential election and manipulated the records. U.S. media have speculated that he may be indicted soon.
