Dynamic Signal Adjustment Through Vehicle and Pedestrian Video Detection
Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, is currently conducting a pilot operation by installing smart responsive signals at 11 locations along National Road No. 24 (from Jeolbusa Intersection to Namha-myeon Ilwon Bridge Intersection), and will begin full operation from the end of March after transferring facility management.
The responsive signal system automatically detects pedestrians or vehicles using video at traffic signals, granting only the necessary signals and reducing unnecessary waiting times to facilitate smooth vehicle flow.
Additionally, it detects vehicles entering and exiting side roads and pedestrians at crosswalks (via video or pedestrian buttons), providing only the required signals, while granting straight signals on the main road during other times to alleviate intersection signal waiting and congestion.
Last year, Geochang-gun was selected for a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport public project, securing 1.53 billion KRW in national funds and investing a total of 1.836 billion KRW. They signed a business agreement with the Busan Regional Construction and Management Administration and completed the installation of the responsive signal system.
Kang Gwang-seok, Director of Construction and Transportation, stated, “We expect vehicle flow within Geochang-eup to improve smoothly through this responsive signal installation,” and added, “We will continue to strive to provide better transportation services to our residents.”
