Gregory May, the US Consul General in Hong Kong, dismissed the three red lines proposed by China, stating on the 22nd that "they do not affect my duties at all," according to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post.
According to the report, Consul General May expressed this during a virtual town hall meeting with Americans residing in Hong Kong, saying he would continue to voice concerns regarding issues related to Hong Kong's National Security Law and the erosion of autonomy.
The three red lines presented by China to Consul General May consist of: ▲ not endangering China's national security ▲ not engaging in political infiltration in Hong Kong ▲ not disparaging or undermining Hong Kong's development prospects.
Earlier, the Hong Kong office of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Hong Kong Special Representative Office, announced on the 23rd of last month that it had notified Consul General May of these red lines.
Consul General May emphasized that Hong Kong serves as a communication channel through which the US can understand the development of the mainland and plays an extremely important role in US-China relations. He added, "In addition to official communication with the people here (in Hong Kong), we want to maintain academic exchanges," stating that he has been in contact with various political views, including Hong Kong government officials and members of the Legislative Council (National Assembly).
