Goheung-gun's Environmental Cleanup Activity Commemorating 'World Water Day'

Importance of Water Resource Conservation and Drinking Water Preservation

On the 22nd, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Yeong-min) announced that to commemorate 'World Water Day,' more than 60 people, including Governor Gong Yeong-min, public officials, and representatives from the water supply agency, participated in water source environmental cleanup activities and a water-saving campaign.

World Water Day is observed annually on March 22nd and was established by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness about the importance of water and to urge countries to pay attention and cooperate in solving water-related issues. This year's theme for World Water Day in South Korea is 'Change Together, A New Wave of Opportunity,' which signifies the need for all stakeholders?government, businesses, and citizens?to collaboratively create change to actively respond to water crises such as floods and droughts caused by climate change.

In celebration of World Water Day, the county conducted environmental cleanup activities at Hohyeongje, a water source supplying drinking water to the Goheung-eup area, collecting household waste and debris along the surroundings of Hohyeongje.

Additionally, to raise awareness among residents about the severity of the drought situation at Juam Dam, which supplies drinking water to the Goheung region, and to foster voluntary participation in water-saving efforts, a 'Water Saving Campaign in Daily Life' was held, adding significance to the event.

The main promotional messages included practical water-saving methods such as ▲doing laundry in batches ▲using collected water for dishwashing ▲placing water bottles in toilet tanks ▲using a cup when brushing teeth ▲lowering water pressure on faucets ▲cutting shower time in half. The county focused on promoting these methods and urged residents to voluntarily participate.

Governor Gong Yeong-min inspected the water treatment facilities at Hohyeong Water Purification Plant and stated, “I hope this World Water Day event serves as an opportunity for all of us to recognize the importance of water and the necessity of conserving water resources in this era of climate crisis.” He added, “We will continue to prioritize the safety of residents from water crises and do our best to proactively respond to water-related emergencies.”
