NHN announced on the 22nd that it has concluded the month-long ‘Employee Participation Carbon Credit Offset Campaign’ conducted in collaboration with Winkl, a specialized carbon climate action company.
This event, held as part of NHN’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) campaign ‘Little Action,’ was designed to support employees in easily participating in climate action in their daily lives amid the rising issue of carbon neutrality. In January, NHN signed a joint business agreement with Winkl and the Environmental Foundation to promote climate action.
NHN employees practiced climate action by directly purchasing carbon credits generated from projects such as forest restoration in Brazil through Winkl, a blockchain-based carbon credit trading platform, and offsetting them or donating credits to companies in need. Winkl is characterized by subdividing the traditional ton (t) unit of carbon credit trading to allow individuals to purchase easily. Purchases start from 1,000 KRW and support Payco easy payment, enabling anyone to participate in carbon credit trading without burden.
Through the campaign, a total of 200 tons of carbon credits were offset, including company matching purchases based on employee purchases. Considering that the average daily carbon dioxide emission per adult is about 35 kg, this offset effect corresponds to the daily carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 6,000 people.
Additionally, on the occasion of ‘World Water Day’ established by the United Nations (UN), NHN replaced all water-saving faucet nozzles in the restrooms of its Pangyo headquarters building and data center to reduce water usage within the company.
This change enables employees to reduce water usage by about 50%, contributing to solving the increasingly serious social issue of water shortage.
Jung Yeon-hoon, head of NHN’s ESG division, stated, “We collaborated with Winkl to conduct the carbon credit offset campaign to provide a platform where employees can understand the concept of carbon neutrality and voluntarily participate. In light of various emerging climate issues, we plan to continue diverse eco-friendly activities that can raise awareness and participation among employees.”
