Through this agreement, the two organizations have agreed to work together on research for innovative maritime transportation systems, including the enhancement of basic transportation rights for island residents.
They pledged to discover cooperative projects related to research and investigation in the maritime transportation sector of Korea’s island regions, and to jointly plan and seek ways to promote the construction of island statistics and maritime safety platform databases.
The main points of the agreement include ▲ maritime public transportation policies to improve the mobility rights of island residents ▲ activation of maritime transportation use for economic development in island regions ▲ linked operation of island statistics and maritime safety platforms ▲ joint cooperation in research and investigation in maritime transportation and island regions ▲ cooperation to reduce uninspected vessels in island areas to prevent maritime accidents ▲ and promotion activities related to maritime safety and island region revitalization (broadcasting, education, events, etc.).
Starting with this agreement, the two organizations plan to maintain a cooperative relationship and gradually expand the scope of exchange and cooperation in maritime transportation and safety-related fields for island residents.
Kim Jun-seok, Chairman of the Korea Maritime Safety Authority, said, “Through this agreement, based on the capabilities and strong cooperation of both organizations, we will create innovative maritime safety service plans to improve the living conditions of island residents.” He added, “We will do our best to expand the roles and functions of both organizations to enhance public satisfaction.”
Oh Dong-ho, President of the Korea Island Development Institute, responded, “We have been conducting various research and activities to restore the basic rights of citizens that island residents have not enjoyed.” He continued, “This agreement is one part of that effort, and we plan to maintain an organic relationship with the Korea Maritime Safety Authority to ensure island residents’ transportation rights are guaranteed.”
