Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, will conduct a special crackdown on vehicle emissions until the 31st in preparation for high concentrations of fine dust in spring.
The main targets for inspection are freight trucks and old diesel vehicles that emit large amounts of exhaust smoke. In areas with dense vehicle traffic, roadside inspections using exhaust gas measuring devices and video measurements will be conducted after stopping the vehicles.
The inspection method will involve moving the inspection points while considering vehicle traffic volume and exhaust emission conditions.
Idling of vehicles will also be subject to crackdown. The targets are all vehicles unnecessarily idling in restricted idling zones (excluding emergency vehicles, refrigerated trucks, and vehicles under maintenance), except when the ambient temperature is below 5℃ or above 27℃.
For vehicles exceeding the emission standards based on roadside emission measurements and other inspections, improvement orders will be issued to have the vehicles repaired and inspected within 15 days. Vehicles that fail to comply with the improvement orders will be subject to a suspension of operation order within 10 days.
Vehicles idling in designated restricted areas will be fined 50,000 KRW. Drivers must cooperate with emission inspections, and those who refuse, evade, or obstruct the inspection will be fined up to 2 million KRW.
A county official stated, “This intensive vehicle emission crackdown aims to raise awareness that vehicle emissions are a major source of fine dust, and to encourage participation in the early scrapping support program for old diesel vehicles when excessive smoke emissions occur due to vehicle aging.”
