Composed of Vienna Philharmonic Musicians
May 1 at Lotte Concert Hall
'Vienna Cello Ensemble 5+1,' showcasing a diverse repertoire from Bach to contemporary music, is returning to Korean audiences after four years.
The Vienna Cello Ensemble is set to present a unique performance with five cellos and one flute at Lotte Concert Hall on May 1st.
The Vienna Cello Ensemble was founded in 2008 by musicians who have long performed together in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Centered around Gerhard Kaufmann, who has been active as a cellist since 1969, the ensemble consists of cellists Sebastian Brue (Vienna Philharmonic), Bernhard Hedenborg (Vienna Philharmonic), Florian Egner (Egner Trio), and Milan Karanovic (Vienna Chamber Orchestra).
Based on precise teamwork that moves as one, they deliver acrobatic-like performances. This year, flutist Karin Bonelli (Vienna Philharmonic) joined, transforming 'Vienna Cello Ensemble 5' into 'Vienna Cello Ensemble 5+1.' The ensemble, which simultaneously expresses various parts through the cello to enhance the charm of its tone color, offers a fascinating and fantastic performance where multiple musicians play on a single cello.
The first part of the concert features newly interpreted and arranged masterpieces of classical music from Bach to contemporary works, delivering astonishing performances. Audiences can enjoy masterpieces spanning various eras, from Bach's Suite for Flute and Strings BWV 1067 Badinerie to Shostakovich's Adagio.
The second part proceeds with a special concept that immerses the audience. The performers add a touch of acting to their costumes and accessories, showcasing Vienna's unique playful and distinctive charm. The theme is 'International Climate Conference.' The Vienna Cello Ensemble humorously portrays a story of winning the love of a beautiful woman at the international climate conference. They embody heated debates through performance and play pieces that match the flow between scenes.
A representative of Lotte Concert Hall said, "The Vienna Cello Ensemble, returning to Korea after four years, will captivate audiences first with the deep tone of the cello, then with the exciting performance, and once again with the perfect harmony among the performers. Audiences will inevitably fall deeply in love with the charm of the cello."
