The "Support Project for Students with Intractable Diseases," launched in 2001, is a program designed to alleviate the financial burden on parents by providing medical expense support to students suffering from intractable diseases and to instill love and a spirit of service in the students.

Applications for support are accepted on an ongoing basis, and decisions are announced once a month to ensure that students with intractable diseases receive timely treatment.

Among the elementary, middle, and high school students who received medical expense support from Gyeongbuk Office of Education over 22 years, 718 students completed treatment and graduated, 129 students were fully cured, 191 passed away, and 70 transferred schools.

There is no limit to the amount of medical expense support for students selected as having intractable diseases, and if the amount is insufficient, it can be increased and support continues until full recovery.

However, if support is received from national medical expense support projects or other intractable disease support programs, duplicate support is not allowed, and the order of medical expense claims is insurance, public health center, and then the Office of Education, with no double payments.

Gyeongbuk Office of Education was recognized for being the first in the nation to promote the "Support Project for Students with Intractable Diseases" since 2001 and received the "Presidential Group Commendation" on World Health Day, April 7, 2006.
