Hwang In-suk Selected as Poet for the 5th Kim Jong-cheol Literary Award

Publisher Munhaksoochup and the Kim Jong-cheol Poet Memorial Association announced on the 20th that the 5th Kim Jong-cheol Literary Award winner is poet Hwang In-sook (65) for her work My Life's Pretty Calf (Munhakgwa Jiseongsa).

The judging panel commented, "Poet Hwang has mastered uniquely expressing the truth of life and poetic nuances through his own language by capturing trivial aspects of everyday life."

Poet Hwang debuted in 1984 through the Kyunghyang Shinmun New Year's Literary Contest and has published poetry collections such as Birds Set the Sky Free, Sorrow Awakens Me, We Met Like Migratory Birds, My Melancholy, Precious One, and Obvious Walk. He has received awards including the Dongseo Literary Award, the Hyundai Literary Award, and the Kim Soo-young Literary Award.

The Kim Jong-cheol Literary Award was established in 2018 by Munhaksoochup and the Kim Jong-cheol Poet Memorial Association to inherit the poetic spirit of the late poet Kim Jong-cheol (1947?2014) and to support Korean poetry literature.

This literary award was judged based on new poetry collections published over the two years from 2021 to 2022, with a prize of 10 million won. The acceptance speech, judges' comments, and critical essays on the winning poetry collection will be published in the second half issue (late September) of the literary magazine Munhaksoochup over six months.
