[Box Office] Japanese Anime 'Suzume no Tojimari' Approaches 2 Million Viewers

'Soulmate' Starts at 3rd Place

The Japanese animated film 'Suzume no Tojimari' has maintained its position at the top of the box office for the second week and is on the verge of surpassing 2 million viewers.


According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales network on the 20th, over the past weekend (17th-19th), 'Suzume no Tojimari' attracted 712,426 viewers, securing the number one spot at the box office. Since its release on the 8th, it has surpassed a cumulative audience of 1,951,105.

'Suzume no Tojimari,' the new work by director Makoto Shinkai, who also directed 'Your Name.' (2017) and 'Weathering with You' (2019), is an animated film about a girl named Suzume who accidentally opens doors that bring disasters and desperately closes them to prevent disasters occurring across Japan.


The film surpassed 1 million viewers on the 6th day after its release, the 13th. It has held the top spot at the weekend box office for two consecutive weeks and continues its success, approaching a cumulative weekend audience of 2 million.


'The First Slam Dunk,' a Japanese animation released on January 4th and continuing its long-term success, attracted 107,515 viewers over the weekend, ranking second. Its cumulative audience reached 4,155,087.


'Soulmate' (directed by Min Yong-geun), released on the 15th, entered the charts at third place with 72,662 viewers, while 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods,' also released on the same day, started at fourth place with 41,661 viewers.


The total number of moviegoers visiting theaters over the weekend was recorded at 1,121,985.
