In the 16th Gyeongnam Newspaper Cup Grand Race, 'Betelgeuse' and jockey Choi Sidae claimed victory.
The Korea Racing Authority announced on the 20th that Betelgeuse (3 years old) lifted the golden trophy with a prize of 200 million won by showing explosive acceleration in the final stretch of the race held on the 19th at LetsRun Park Busan-Gyeongnam, the Gyeongnam Newspaper Cup (6th race, 1400m).
Among the nine horses that participated, Betelgeuse, who was running in the middle ranks in the early stages, succeeded in overtaking just before the finish line. The race record was 1 minute 26.3 seconds, emerging as the leading domestic 3-year-old horse this year.
Betelgeuse inherited the bloodline of 'Tapit,' known as the world's top sire. Jockey Choi Sidae has recorded 6 wins out of 8 races together.
At the awards ceremony that day, Nam Gil-woo, chairman of Gyeongnam Newspaper, attended and presented the winning trophy to owner Lee Jong-hoon, trainer Baek Kwang-yeol, and jockey Choi Sidae of Betelgeuse.
On the same day, at LetsRun Park Seoul, 'Something Lost' (3 years old, male), ridden by jockey Lee Hyuk, won the 'Sports Seoul Cup.'
