The Jeonnam Provincial Council announced on the 20th that it will operate a youth council classroom focused on experience and communication for about 1,000 students from 32 elementary, middle, and high schools in the province, as well as out-of-school youth centers, from the 22nd to December 5th.
The 'Youth Council Classroom' is a program where local youth become council members for a day and directly participate in ▲council member oath-taking ▲agenda processing ▲free speech, experiencing the role of local councils and the democratic decision-making process.
Since operating the council classroom in 2009, the Provincial Council has held 244 sessions with 674 schools and 14,889 participants. The Ministry of Education has designated the Jeonnam Provincial Council as an 'Education Donation Career Experience Certified Institution' from 2019 to 2024.
Last year, due to COVID-19, 221 students from 9 schools participated online in the first half of the year, and 548 students from 13 schools participated in person in the second half, but this year all schools will participate in person.
This year's first Youth Council Classroom will be held at Gokseong Okgwa Elementary School on the 22nd, with 45 students participating. They will start with a meeting with the local district council member and directly experience the provincial council plenary session process, including the 'chairperson election,' debates for and against the 'ordinance to establish a school store,' and voting.
Chairman Seo Dong-wook said, "I hope this council classroom experience will help youth correctly understand the functions and roles of the council and serve as an opportunity to cultivate mature democratic citizenship."
