Ministry of Science and ICT-Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity Begin Selection in 9 Fields
Recruitment of students for this year's International Science Olympiad has begun.
On the 20th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that, together with the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, it is recruiting middle and high school students to challenge the International Science Olympiad, known as the brain Olympics for gifted young scientists worldwide.
The International Science Olympiad is a world-class student competition in basic science fields where students under 20 years old who have not received university education compete in knowledge and research skills in mathematics, physics, chemistry, informatics, biology, astronomy, earth science, secondary science, and physics tournaments.
Since Korea first participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1988, it has consistently participated in Olympiads across nine fields. This year as well, to discover and nurture youth talented in mathematics and science, the Korean Science Olympiad Committees for each field are recruiting students to challenge the International Science Olympiad.
Recruitment announcements have begun for biology (February 13?April 10), secondary science (March 7?May 31), physics (March 15?April 5), and mathematics (March 16?April 12), and applications are currently being accepted. In the future, recruitment will open for chemistry (March 20?April 9), informatics (March 27?April 29), astronomy (April 3?May 3), earth science (April 10?May 12), and physics tournament (mid-September) fields.
Students will undergo a multifaceted curriculum including online education and seasonal schools during vacation periods. They will satisfy their learning desires through in-depth educational programs led by university professors and mentors who are alumni of international competitions. They will also have opportunities to engage in experimental and practical activities that foster interaction and cooperation with peers.
Students who achieve excellent results at each educational stage will be given the opportunity to participate in the national representative selection competition for the International Science Olympiad. The final selected students will represent Korea at the 2024 international competition and compete in friendly rivalry with outstanding scientific talents from around the world. All expenses for participating in the international competition will be fully supported by the national treasury. Especially this year, face-to-face educational activities, which were reduced due to COVID-19, will be expanded, and students from general high schools, female students, and socially integrated students will receive preferential treatment during education and selection processes. The government plans to continue and strengthen follow-up support related to admission, scholarships, and military service so that outstanding mathematics and science talents can grow into future science and technology leaders of Korea.
Detailed information about recruitment for International Science Olympiad students can be found on the websites of the Korean Science Olympiad Committees for each field.
