Police Launch Internal Investigation into Drug Use Allegations Against Jeon Du-hwan's Grandson

Police Receive No Complaints or Accusations Regarding Slush Fund Allegations
Additional JMS Damage Reports Continue... Considering Further Indictments

The police have initiated a pre-booking investigation (internal inquiry) regarding suspicions of drug use by Jeon Woo-won (27), the grandson of the late former President Jeon Du-hwan.

A National Investigation Headquarters official from the National Police Agency stated at a regular press briefing on the 20th, "A video suspected of showing Jeon using drugs was posted online, and we are currently conducting a pre-booking investigation (internal inquiry) to verify the facts."


In the early morning of the 17th (Korean time), Jeon appeared on a YouTube live broadcast seemingly using drugs. During the broadcast, he mentioned various drugs and subsequently appeared to consume substances suspected to be narcotics. The police stated that they plan to execute warrants to verify whether acquaintances mentioned by Jeon reside in Korea.


However, regarding Jeon's allegations exposing family corruption, the police said, "There are no specific details about slush fund formation, and no complaints or accusations have been filed with the police so far."


Regarding the investigation into the Christian Gospel Mission (JMS), the official said, "In October last year, the Women's Investigation Unit of the Chungnam Police Agency made arrests. Three additional victims have reported damages, and the first round of investigations with the victims has been completed." He added, "Based on the testimonies, we are reviewing whether to book additional suspects."


Concerning the investigation of lawyer Jeong Soon-shin, who is suspected of deliberately concealing information during the personnel screening process for the head of the National Investigation Headquarters, the official responded, "The complainant's investigation was completed on the 9th, and we are currently examining the legal aspects and facts."


Earlier, the civic group Committee for the Protection of the Common People’s Livelihood filed a complaint with the police, requesting an investigation into lawyer Jeong Soon-shin for allegations of falsifying official documents and obstructing official duties through deception related to administrative litigation concealment, and against Police Chief Yoon Hee-geun for abuse of authority, obstruction of the exercise of rights, and violation of the Employment Procedures Act.


Regarding the vandalism of the gravesite of Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, and his parents, the official said, "The Gyeongbuk Police Agency has formed a joint investigation team and is conducting an investigation. A pre-booking investigation is currently underway to verify the facts." He added, "We conducted on-site inspections twice and are verifying facts with the person who first witnessed the vandalism."


Regarding the police appearance schedule of actor Yoo Ah-in (37), who is suspected of drug use, the official stated, "We are currently coordinating the appearance date with his legal counsel."
