SK Telecom has created proposals for a 5G mid-tier plan and a senior plan and reported them to the government.
An SKT official stated on the 20th, "We have prepared a 5G mid-tier plan and a senior plan that is cheaper than the standard 5G plan, and last week submitted the terms of service notification documents to the Ministry of Science and ICT."
As a market-dominant operator, SK Telecom is subject to the reservation notification system, which requires submitting the terms of service to the government and going through the Terms of Service Review Advisory Committee before launching the plans.
Currently, SKT operates plans based on data allowances of 8GB (49,000 KRW), 11GB (55,000 KRW), 24GB (59,000 KRW), and 110GB (69,000 KRW).
Earlier, the government announced at the 13th Emergency Economic and Livelihood Meeting last month that it is encouraging operators to launch 5G mid-tier plans in the 40GB to 100GB range within the first half of the year. Therefore, the new mid-tier plans are expected to fall within the 40GB to 100GB range.
The official said, "Since the plan details are not finalized, it is difficult to disclose specifics."
The senior plan is reported to be similar to LG Uplus’s senior plan, which offers 8GB at 45,000 KRW, 2,000 KRW cheaper than the standard plan, and includes age-segmented pricing that becomes cheaper for older age groups.
If these plans are finalized, they are expected to be launched around next month after system updates and other preparations.
Other telecom companies such as KT and LG Uplus are also preparing to report 5G mid-tier and senior plans. A KT official said, "We are preparing new 5G mid-tier and senior plans considering customers’ communication usage patterns."
