Mokpo Coast Guard Catches Drunk Captain Operating Vessel off Jindo Coast

Suspected Violation of Maritime Safety Act with Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.07%

Captain A was caught by the Coast Guard for drinking alcohol and operating a vessel at sea.


According to the Mokpo Coast Guard on the 20th, at 9:19 a.m. on the 18th, a report of onboard assault was received from fishing vessel B (9.77t, 7 crew members) off Gwanmaedo, Jodo-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do.

The Coast Guard dispatched to the scene and conducted a breathalyzer test on Captain A (in his 50s), confirming a blood alcohol concentration of 0.071%.


It was revealed that Captain A drank alcohol inside fishing vessel B around 3 a.m. that day and operated vessel B in an intoxicated state until 9 a.m. for fishing operations.


The Coast Guard plans to conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances of the drunk operation and punish him according to relevant laws.


Meanwhile, under the Maritime Safety Act, the standard for drunk operation enforcement is a blood alcohol concentration of 0.03% or higher, and depending on the blood alcohol level, offenders may face imprisonment from 2 to 5 years or a fine ranging from 20 million to 30 million KRW.
