Expansion of Yangcheon Jangsu Cultural University

Yangcheon-gu Expands Operation of Yangcheon Jangsu Cultural University… Recruiting 450 New Students from 9 Neighborhoods

Increased Number of Lectures and Participants, Operated in Two Semesters Covering 9 Neighborhoods Each, District-Hosted Integrated Graduation Ceremony

Weekly 10-Week Courses Offered in Culture, Liberal Arts, Health and Welfare, Digital Competency Enhancement, and Field Trips

Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gijae) announced that it will expand the operation of the “33rd Yangcheon Jangsu Cultural University” starting this year to meet the learning needs of senior citizens and support a vibrant retirement life in the aging era.

Yangcheon Jangsu Cultural University, first planned nationwide by Yangcheon-gu, has become a representative senior welfare project since its first opening in 2004, producing 20,726 graduates to date.

In the past three years, to prevent COVID-19 infections among seniors, the district reduced the scale and conducted the program uniformly across 18 neighborhoods. Starting this year, the district has significantly improved this method. The number of lectures will increase from 8 to 10 sessions, and the number of participants will expand from about 30 to around 50. The operation period has also been adjusted to be divided into two semesters, each covering 9 neighborhoods, to ensure more substantial progress.

Additionally, instead of small-scale graduation ceremonies by neighborhood, an “integrated graduation ceremony” hosted by the district will be held, providing a harmonious event where participants can enjoy talent shows and case presentations together.

In the first semester (April to June), Mok 1-5 neighborhoods and Sinjeong 1, 2, 6, and 7 neighborhoods will operate the Jangsu Cultural University. In the second semester (September to November), Sinwol 1-7 neighborhoods and Sinjeong 3 and 4 neighborhoods will operate the program. Eligible participants are seniors aged 60 to 65 and older, recruited autonomously according to each neighborhood’s conditions. Applications can be submitted by visiting or calling the local neighborhood community center.

Participants will engage in a weekly 2-hour, 10-week course covering culture, liberal arts, health and welfare, digital competency enhancement, and outdoor field trips. Upon completion, they will receive a certificate of completion.

Main courses include ▲Health knowledge lectures (medication guidance, cardiovascular lectures, etc.) ▲Environmental courses using recycled materials ▲Digital competency enhancement education (smartphone usage, kiosk operation) ▲Arts courses (singing classes, art classes, etc.) ▲Life safety education ▲Senior-specialized programs such as gymnastics and silver yoga.

Since recruitment, opening schedules, and programs vary by neighborhood community center, please contact the respective neighborhood community center’s autonomous hall for detailed information.

Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “We are expanding the Yangcheon Jangsu Cultural University, which had been downsized due to COVID-19, to meet the diverse needs of seniors. We have prepared many useful and enjoyable programs, so we hope seniors will enjoy a lively retirement life at their neighborhood community centers this coming spring.”
