Yoon Cites Kishida on Twitter, Saying "A New Start for Korea-Japan Relations"

Declaration to Restore Shuttle Diplomacy Through Previous Day's Korea-Japan Summit Meeting

On the second day of his visit to Japan, President Yoon Suk-yeol stated on the 17th, "I hope we can work together to create a brighter bilateral relationship for future generations."

President Yoon said through Twitter on the same day, "As the President of the Republic of Korea, I visited Japan for the first time in 12 years and held talks with Prime Minister Kishida. I am deeply honored to announce a new start in Korea-Japan relations to the people of both countries, who are the closest neighbors sharing universal values."

President Yoon also quoted a tweet from Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Prime Minister Kishida wrote on Twitter, "I decided to further develop Korea-Japan relations together with President Yoon of Korea. We also agreed to resume shuttle diplomacy. Strengthening Korea-Japan relations is an urgent task in the current strategic environment."

The day before, President Yoon and Prime Minister Kishida held a Korea-Japan summit and declared the restoration of shuttle diplomacy between the two heads of state for the first time in 12 years. Taking this summit as an opportunity, both countries plan to progressively inherit the Kim Dae-jung-Obuchi Declaration and seek a developmental relationship through cooperation encompassing all fields including economy, security, science and technology, culture, and future generations. In particular, during their joint press conference, they clearly stated their intention to swiftly resolve existing contentious issues such as forced labor, export regulations, and the Korea-Japan General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA).
