A woman in her 20s was arrested for causing the death of her infant, just over 76 days old, due to malnutrition.
According to the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency on the 17th, the mother, identified as A, did not take her daughter to the hospital despite the baby showing signs of health problems, such as vomiting formula milk for several days, at their residence in Palyong-dong, Uichang-gu, Changwon City.
Then, on March 27, 2022, at around 9:20 a.m., she called 119 reporting that the baby was not breathing.
The infant was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest but ultimately could not be revived.
An autopsy revealed that the baby died from malnutrition and had no registered name as the birth had not been reported.
Police began an investigation on June 29 of the same year and on October 31, A was sent to prosecution without detention on charges of child abuse (neglect and abandonment), but charges of child abuse resulting in death were not applied.
A, who had consistently ignored police summons during the supplementary investigation, was arrested on March 14, 2023, on charges of child abuse resulting in death and was detained by a court order the following day.
A, known to be an unmarried mother, admitted to the charges during police questioning, including not seeking hospital treatment, but reportedly stated, “I lacked parenting experience and did not know the baby would die.”
The police plan to transfer A to the prosecution after completing further investigation.
