Oh Miseop, a member of the Gwangju Seo-gu Council, announced on the 16th that the ‘Seo-gu Ordinance on Prevention of Violence Against Women and Protection and Support for Victims (Draft)’ was passed at the 2nd plenary session of the 310th extraordinary meeting.
The ordinance was enacted to establish an institutional basis for preventing violence against women and protecting and supporting victims, following the enactment and enforcement of the Basic Act on the Prevention of Violence Against Women, and to promote policies that enhance individual dignity and human rights.
The scope of violence against women is expanded to include domestic violence, sexual violence, continuous harassment, and violence arising from intimate relationships, which is expected to serve as a foundation for policy promotion on preventing violence against women and supporting victims.
The ordinance expands the definition of victims to include indirect victims such as spouses, lineal relatives, and siblings, enabling broad support for them, and stipulates the responsibilities of the district mayor to provide a basis for administrative and financial support to prevent violence against women.
It also includes provisions for the establishment and operation of the ‘Committee for the Prevention of Violence Against Women,’ which will deliberate on victim support policies.
Councilor Oh stated, “Through the enactment of this ordinance, a basis has been established for preventing violence against women and supporting victim protection. Based on this ordinance, we will strive to promote policies to prevent violence against women and help create a Seo-gu where violence against women is eradicated.”
