Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo-gu, Attends Gangseo-gu Scholarship Foundation Meeting... “Will Spare No Support”

Sharing 2022 Project Performance and 2023 Activity Plans

Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo-gu, Seoul, attended the board meeting of the Gangseo-gu Scholarship Foundation on the 14th and expressed his commitment to spare no interest and support for academic assistance to students from low-income families.

The board meeting, held at 5 p.m. in the large conference room of the district office, was attended by about 10 people including Mayor Kim Tae-woo, Song Jin-su, Chairman of the Gangseo-gu Scholarship Foundation, and foundation officials.

The meeting was held to share the 2022 financial settlement and project performance and to discuss this year’s activity plans.

Participants agreed to expand the scholarship scale compared to last year to alleviate the economic burden on students from low-income families, anticipating economic difficulties this year. The scholarship payment scale for this year was finalized at a record high of 263.2 million KRW.

Mayor Kim Tae-woo said, “Although the welfare sector accounts for the largest portion of the district budget, support for socially vulnerable groups is still insufficient,” adding, “I deeply appreciate the Gangseo-gu Scholarship Foundation for their efforts to help students from difficult family environments focus on their studies.”

He continued, “The district will also spare no multifaceted support to ensure that our students do not give up their studies due to economic reasons.”

Meanwhile, the Gangseo-gu Scholarship Foundation was established in 2001 under the slogan “Gangseo’s talents are the strength of Gangseo people.” The foundation has supported a total of about 1.839 billion KRW in scholarships to 1,403 local students to date.

Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced on the 14th that it signed a sisterhood agreement with Mongolia’s Selenge Province at the planning situation room of Eunpyeong-gu Office.

The agreement aims to promote friendship and cooperation and foster regional development through mutual exchanges between Eunpyeong-gu and Selenge Province. The return visit took place about six months after Eunpyeong-gu visited Mongolia last September for international exchange and private sector cooperation projects of local governments.

So far, the two local governments have maintained steady exchanges, including a Mongolian parliamentarian attending the Eunpyeong Citizens’ Day event and Selenge Province officials visiting Eunpyeong-gu Office for a meeting with the mayor.

The signing ceremony was attended by about 60 representatives from various fields on both sides, including the heads of the organizations, Mongolian parliamentarians, the director of the Selenge Fire Department, county heads from seven regions, Mongolian businesspeople and artists, the chairpersons of Eunpyeong-gu Council, and heads of Eunpyeong-gu civic organizations.

Eunpyeong-gu awarded honorary Eunpyeong citizenship certificates to Governor Rakbadorji of Selenge Province, who leads efforts to promote Eunpyeong-gu abroad, and Mongolian parliamentarian Unurbolor, and presented a Taegeukgi (Korean national flag) designated as a national treasure from Jingwansa Temple as a commemorative gift for the sisterhood agreement.

To make this sisterhood agreement even more meaningful, Selenge Province presented plaques of appreciation to Bucheon Sejong Hospital, which signed a medical support agreement for children with heart disease in Selenge, and to the Eunpyeong Chamber of Commerce, which pledged sponsorship.

The Mongolian Selenge Province delegation, visiting Korea for 3 nights and 4 days, will experience advanced systems in various fields by visiting social welfare facilities in Eunpyeong-gu, Bulgwangcheon Media Center, Eunpyeong Fire Station, and Yangju Agricultural Technology Center. They will also have time to learn about the “Bukhansan Han (韓) Culture,” a pride of Eunpyeong, by visiting the Eunpyeong History Hanok Museum and the millennium-old Jingwansa Temple.

Additionally, Selenge Province formed an 11-member art troupe for this delegation and will introduce various traditional Mongolian cultures to Eunpyeong-gu through a “Sisterhood Agreement Commemorative Cultural Exchange Event” held on the 15th at the Forest Theater of Eunpyeong Culture and Arts Center. Eunpyeong-gu will invite foreigners residing in the area, including Mongolians, to enjoy the performance together.

Mayor Kim Mi-kyung of Eunpyeong-gu said, “We look forward to active exchange activities where both regions’ public and private sectors can support each other,” adding, “I hope the two cities share a vision as partners and develop together.”
