A union official who demanded monthly fees from a tower crane at an apartment construction site is facing arrest.
The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency's Violent Crime Investigation Unit announced on the 14th that they have requested an arrest warrant for A (in his 40s), an official of the Tower Crane Union of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Eastern Branch of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, on charges of joint extortion and intimidation.
The police applied for A's warrant due to the seriousness of the crime and concerns over evidence tampering.
A's pre-arrest suspect interrogation was held that morning, and the results are expected to be released as early as the afternoon.
A is accused of extorting a total of 185 million won in monthly fees from a construction company at an apartment construction site in Yeosu, Jeonnam, between February and December 2020.
A, along with three tower crane operators, reportedly demanded the monthly fees while threatening and holding rallies.
The police are investigating 36 union officials and members without detention following a complaint from the Honam-Jeju Reinforced Concrete (RC) Federation.
The police have moved to secure custody of A, whose charges have been specifically identified among them.
