Seoul Gangseo-gu Fully Renovates Gyeomjae Jeongseon Memorial Room and Jingyeong Cultural Experience Room, Establishes Original Painting Exhibition Room
Reopening Ceremony Held at 2 PM on the 16th in the Multipurpose Room of Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum
District Mayor Kim Tae-woo: “Expecting the Birth of an Art Museum to Enjoy and Experience the Artistic Value of Gyeomjae’s Works”
Seoul Gangseo-gu (District Mayor Kim Tae-woo) announced that the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum will reopen after a complete renovation.
The Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum is the only specialized museum dedicated to Gyeomjae in Korea, celebrating its 14th anniversary since opening.
Gyeomjae Jeongseon, during his tenure as Yangcheon-hyeollyeong (equivalent to the current Gangseo District Mayor) from 1740 to 1745 in the Joseon era under King Yeongjo, captured the beautiful landscapes of the Gangseo area on canvas.
To honor the achievements of Gyeomjae Jeongseon, a master of true-view landscape painting, and to inherit and develop the Jingyeong culture, the district established the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum near Gungsan in Gayang-dong in 2009.
Starting remodeling in August last year to newly highlight Gyeomjae Jeongseon’s artistic world, the district fully revamped the contents and exhibition direction of the ‘Gyeomjae Jeongseon Memorial Room’ and the ‘Jingyeong Cultural Experience Room,’ and created an ‘Original Painting Exhibition Room’ where visitors can professionally appreciate Gyeomjae’s works.
The ‘Gyeomjae Jeongseon Memorial Room’ is composed of six thematic panels that depict Gyeomjae Jeongseon’s life and artistic world.
▲ Panel 1 ? Establishing a Family in Painting ▲ Panel 2 ? Opening a New Horizon in Painting: True-view Landscape Painting ▲ Panel 3 ? Painting the Ideals of the Literati: Hanyang True-view Landscape Painting ▲ Panel 4 ? Reaching a Mature Stage: Yangcheon and Han River True-view ▲ Panel 5 ? Finally Achieving Mastery: Masterpiece ▲ Panel 6 ? Exhibition of Gyeomjae’s Original Paintings. These panels illuminate the greatness of Gyeomjae Jeongseon’s life and the artistic grandeur captured on his canvases, which made a significant mark in Korean art history.
In particular, the ‘Yangcheon and Han River True-view’ corner offers an immersive exhibition experience by comparing paintings left by Gyeomjae during his Yangcheon-hyeollyeong period 300 years ago with the current scenery.
Additionally, the newly established ‘Jingyeong Cultural Experience Room’ has enhanced experiential elements tailored to children’s perspectives. Beyond assembling Jingyeong puzzles, visitors can see, hear, and experience true-view landscape paintings through a hologram experience hall incorporating advanced media technology, increasing dynamism.
The reopening ceremony of the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum will be held at 2 PM on the 16th in the multipurpose room of the museum. The event will feature a special exhibition titled ‘Stepping Out of Form, Standing at the Center of Existence’ by world-renowned media artist Lee Lee-nam, along with a relay lecture series on Gyeomjae by domestic art historians, celebrating the museum’s rebirth as a professional art institution.
Artist Lee Lee-nam is known for creatively reinterpreting classical masterpieces by integrating cutting-edge IT technology, opening a new chapter in media art. The special exhibition showcases digital reinterpretations of Gyeomjae Jeongseon’s representative works such as ‘Inwangjesaekdo’ and ‘Geumgangjeondo,’ allowing visitors to experience his imaginative vision and visual beauty.
District Mayor Kim Tae-woo said, “As the only specialized museum dedicated to Gyeomjae in Korea, we expect it to become a museum where residents can come to see, enjoy, and experience the greatness and artistic charm of Gyeomjae, who led Korea’s unique true-view landscape painting tradition. We will develop Gangseo’s distinctive artistic content and create a Gangseo full of culture and art.”
Seongbuk-gu (District Mayor Lee Seung-ro) will hold the ‘March Seongbuk-gu Residents Walking Contest’ on the 25th.
Anyone interested in walking and health can participate on-site without prior registration.
Seongbuk-gu held a total of four walking contests from August to November last year after social distancing measures were eased, providing residents with opportunities for gradual recovery to daily life and mental and physical healing, receiving enthusiastic responses from many residents.
Hosted by the Seongbuk Walking Friends Association and organized by the Seongbuk Health Policy Forum, this walking contest will start at 9 AM on the 25th from Bunsu Maru (Exit 2 of Hansung University Station on Subway Line 4), and participants will walk along the beautiful Seongbukcheon stream trail for about 50 minutes.
After the walking exercise, a prize event will be held. Over 50 generous prizes, including bicycles and rice cookers, are prepared, raising expectations. Resident Lee from Gireum-dong said, “I have fond memories of spending a joyful weekend with family and friends at last year’s walking contest. This time, I will walk hard and take care of both my health and the prizes.”
Seongbuk District Mayor Lee Seung-ro said, “Starting with a walk along the spring-scented Seongbukcheon, I hope all residents will invigorate their daily lives and spend time improving their health through proper walking. We will also expand opportunities to participate in various health programs for a ‘Happy and Healthy Seongbuk Together.’”
