On the 13th, Miryang City in Gyeongnam held the 104th anniversary reenactment event of the March 13 Miryang Manse Movement in front of Miryang Gwana, organized by the Miryang Hometown Youth Association, to honor the spirit of the patriots who resisted Japanese colonial rule and proclaimed independence.
The Miryang Manse Movement was the largest Manse Movement in the Yeongnam region, held on March 13, 1919, in front of Miryang Gwana on market day.
The March 13 Miryang Manse Movement reenactment event is held to commemorate the spirit of the independence activists who risked their lives to shout "Manse."
This year marks the 17th reenactment event, which began in 2006 and was held face-to-face for the first time in four years since the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the first part of the event, about 1,000 people including descendants of independence patriots, students, and citizens gathered in front of Miryang Gwana to shout "Daehan Doknip Manse" (Long live Korean independence) and marched through the city. The second part of the event took place at the outdoor performance hall in Sammun-dong, featuring a reenactment performance of the Manse Movement, a commemorative ceremony including the reading of the Declaration of Independence, and concluded with flower offerings and incense burning.
Mayor Park Il-ho said, “We will inherit the proud spirit and will of the people of Miryang and further develop and carry on Miryang as the hometown of righteous zeal.”
