Kim Ki-hyun Decides Not to Take on Special Committee Chairmanship

Kim Ki-hyun, the leader of the People Power Party, met with Assemblyman Ahn Cheol-soo on the 13th to discuss joining forces for victory in next year's general election. This is interpreted as an effort to strengthen the one-team spirit by meeting with competitors he faced during the party leadership primary one by one.

On the day, Kim met with Ahn for about 20 minutes at a cafe in Yeouido.

Ahn said, "I mentioned three important points," adding, "First, after a fierce primary process, the Kim Ki-hyun leadership system has been established, so stabilization is more important than anything else." He continued, "Second, winning next year's general election is crucial. Although this time the candidate was selected with 100% party support, next year's general election candidates will be chosen with 100% public support, so winning in the metropolitan area is important. We shared the recognition that the current situation is very difficult."

Regarding the proposal for role-sharing to secure victory in the general election, Ahn reportedly responded with a reserved attitude, saying, "I want to take some time to consider." Ahn added, "In fact, I have participated in five elections over the past two years," and "It has been the busiest two years in my political career, so I am quite exhausted. I need some time to recharge."

Kim requested the establishment of a special committee related to science and technology and asked Ahn to serve as its chairman. Kim said, "The whole world is at a point where becoming a technological hegemony is linked to survival, so efforts to strengthen competitiveness in the field of science and technology must be made in various ways," adding, "After recharging, he said he would take on a specific role, so we agreed to discuss it then."

On the 14th, Kim is scheduled to meet with Hwang Kyo-ahn, former leader of the United Future Party and another candidate for party leader.
