Initially Denied but Changed Stance After Two Days
Allegations of Assaulting a Middle School Student During Study Abroad in the Philippines
‘The Glory’ PD An Gil-ho acknowledged his wrongdoing and apologized regarding the ‘school violence allegations’ surrounding him.
Kim Moon-hee, a lawyer from the law firm Jipyung representing director An Gil-ho, stated on the 13th, “I sincerely ask for forgiveness from those who were hurt. If given the opportunity, I would like to meet them in person or convey my apology via phone. I am sorry for causing controversy due to this unfortunate matter.”
Lawyer Kim explained, “Director An Gil-ho had a girlfriend during his study abroad in the Philippines in 1996. Upon hearing that his girlfriend became a target of ridicule at school because of him, he momentarily lost control of his emotions and caused irreparable harm to others.”
He added, “We ask for your understanding regarding the delay in issuing a statement since the initial report.”
Earlier, a lengthy post titled ‘The Glory Drama PD School Violence Perpetrator’ was published within the Korean community living in the United States, sparking controversy.
The author, A, began by saying, “This happened during my study abroad in the Philippines in 1996,” and explained, “An Gil-ho PD was a high school senior attending a local school in the Philippines, while we, who were assaulted, were middle school second-year students attending an international school.”
A stated that he became aware of An PD after An started dating a female classmate. A’s friends teased An PD’s girlfriend for dating a high school senior while they were middle schoolers, and upon learning this, An PD summoned two people and assaulted them as a representative, according to the claim.
A wrote, “There were about a dozen older boys including An PD. From then on, the beatings began,” and added, “During the assault, An PD mocked us and threatened others present by saying, ‘Bring a knife. I’ll stab you.’”
An PD initially denied the school violence allegations, stating that although he did study abroad in the Philippines for about a year, he was never involved in any physical altercations with Korean students. However, he ultimately admitted to the allegations and apologized.
Meanwhile, ‘The Glory’ is a work depicting Moon Dong-eun (played by Song Hye-kyo), whose soul was shattered by school violence, embarking on a thoroughly prepared revenge drama risking her entire life. Part 1, released last December, received explosive love, ranking first in Netflix’s global TOP 10 TV (non-English) category. In the newly released Part 2, Moon Dong-eun succeeds in her revenge against the perpetrators, delivering a satisfying ending, and quickly rose to third place globally within a day of release, gaining immense popularity.
