CarbonCo Signs MOU with KEPCO and Geumyang Green Power on Next-Generation Blue Hydrogen Production Technology

CARBONCO, a decarbonization solution specialist company established by DL E&C, announced on the 13th that it will collaborate with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) Power Research Institute and Geumyang Green Power to develop and commercialize next-generation blue hydrogen production technology for carbon neutrality in the power energy sector.

On the 10th, DL E&C signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KEPCO Power Research Institute and Geumyang Green Power at Donuimun D-Tower in Jongno-gu, Seoul, for the "Development and Commercialization of Next-Generation Blue Hydrogen Production Technology."

Through this project, each organization will jointly invest in and participate in the development of 1MWth-class next-generation blue hydrogen production technology. The plan is to apply this technology to hydrogen power plants and start a blue hydrogen production demonstration project in earnest from 2026. Various commercialization plans will also be explored domestically and internationally, including gas turbine co-firing power generation and overseas hydrogen imports.

CARBONCO will participate in the detailed design and manufacturing of the 1MWth-class next-generation blue hydrogen production facility. Additionally, it will conduct basic design and techno-economic analysis of a 10MWth-class facility, followed by conceptual design and feasibility analysis of a large-scale 200MWth commercial next-generation blue hydrogen production facility.

KEPCO Power Research Institute’s next-generation blue hydrogen production technology utilizes oxidation and reduction cyclic reactions of metal materials. The technology produces hydrogen through oxidation reactions of metal materials with water and produces carbon dioxide through reduction reactions with methane, gaining attention as next-generation blue hydrogen production technology. Unlike existing blue hydrogen production technologies, it does not require additional installation of hydrogen purification and carbon capture facilities, which demand significant energy and cost. Therefore, it can produce blue hydrogen with high efficiency and low cost and can be utilized in relatively small spaces.

KEPCO and Korea Midland Power jointly started technology development in 2020, built the largest domestic test facility with a capacity of 20KWth, completed performance testing, and secured key materials. This technology was selected in 2022 as an international standardization strategic technology for carbon neutrality.
