Busan as a Global Hub, Discussing Jisan-Academia Cooperation in Foreign Language Interpretation and Translation for Convergent T
On the 13th at 2 p.m., Busan City will hold an ‘Open Campus Meeting’ at the Busan University of Foreign Studies Library to discuss ways to strengthen industry-academia-government cooperation for nurturing global convergence talents.
The ‘Open Campus Meeting’ is a collaborative forum where Mayor Park Hyung-jun personally visits universities in the Busan area to explore industry-academia-government cooperation projects tailored to each university’s specialized fields and discuss sustainable development plans. Since his inauguration, Mayor Park has held a total of 11 meetings starting with Dong-Eui Institute of Technology in June 2021 to promote his key pledge of industry-academia-government cooperation.
This event was organized to address the growing crisis faced by local universities due to the declining school-age population in Busan and the increasing interest in local university innovation. It aims to utilize the strengths of Busan University of Foreign Studies, which specializes in foreign languages and interpretation/translation, to collaboratively discuss practical industry-academia-government cooperation measures with industry stakeholders.
The city is actively pursuing policies such as hosting the 2030 World Expo, constructing the Gadeokdo New Airport, creating an English-friendly city, revitalizing international exchanges through global networks, and establishing an Asian startup city to leap forward as a global hub city. These policies will be solidly expanded in connection with industry-academia-government cooperation.
Today’s event, themed ‘Industry-Academia-Government Cooperation Measures for Nurturing Global Convergence Talents to Host the 2030 World Expo,’ will be attended by Mayor Park Hyung-jun, Busan University of Foreign Studies President Jang Soon-heung, Special Vice President Shin Gyu-jae of Busan University of Foreign Studies, Chairman Jeong Chung-kyo of the Busan Information Technology Association, CEO Park Nam-do of NDSoft, and students Ko Dong-hyun, Vicente Segura Virekera, and Kim Mi-yeon from Busan University of Foreign Studies.
At the meeting, participants will engage in broad discussions on nurturing global convergence talents, including training global business support personnel, activating international networks for Asian startup investment, integrating entrepreneurship education with information technology (IT), and enhancing competitiveness by increasing quality jobs.
As a pre-event, Lee Hee-gu, CEO of Thailand Hana Steel and an alumnus of the Thai Language Department at Busan University of Foreign Studies (Class of ’92), will explain successful overseas startup cases online and hold a Q&A session with students, providing vivid voices from the field.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun evaluated, “Busan University of Foreign Studies is the only graduate school of interpretation and translation in the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam area, ranked first among private universities in Busan for three consecutive years in the ‘2023 QS Asia University Rankings,’ and has held the top national position for overseas employment rates for nine consecutive years. It excels in all indicators including university quality and employment rates.” He added, “Specialized in foreign languages, Busan University of Foreign Studies is a valuable asset for Busan’s aspiration as a global city. The city will do its best to cooperate with Busan University of Foreign Studies, companies, and institutions to not only host the 2030 World Expo in Busan but also nurture global talents and activate startups to leap forward as a global hub city.”
Mayor Park emphasized, “Since Busan was selected as a pilot area for the government’s core higher education reform, the ‘Regional Innovation-Centered University Support System (RISE),’ on March 8, we will further strengthen cooperation with local universities to complete a Busan-style industry-academia-government cooperation innovation city.”
The city plans to enhance the overall competitiveness of universities in the Busan area through the Open Campus Meeting event and will continue to derive practical cooperation measures considering the characteristics of about 20 universities located in Busan.
