Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province has completed emergency heating cost support for 15,800 low-income vulnerable households, including National Basic Livelihood Security recipients, near-poverty groups, single-parent families, and elderly living alone.
Earlier, in response to the sharp rise in heating costs due to the cold wave in February and the surge in LNG import prices, Yongin City urgently allocated a budget of 3.16 billion KRW to support low-income vulnerable groups.
Although the government increased energy voucher support and implemented special measures for vulnerable groups, the city decided to fully cover heating costs with municipal funds because many National Basic Livelihood Security households are not eligible for energy vouchers, and many near-poverty groups and others find it difficult to receive such benefits.
Thanks to this support, many vulnerable households have been relieved of economic burdens. The heating costs were paid in cash on the 27th of last month directly into the accounts of the eligible household members.
The city guided eligible households on emergency heating cost support through phone calls, text messages, and mail to ensure no one was left out, and visited households that had not applied to assist them in applying.
Additionally, notices for public utility fee reduction applications were sent together to enable eligible recipients to apply for reductions.
A city official stated, "We hope the emergency heating cost support has helped reduce the burden on vulnerable groups even a little," and added, "We will continue to develop more detailed policies to help vulnerable households in the region live more stable lives."
