Suwon City Provides 2 Million KRW Support for Asbestos Removal Costs in Daycare Centers and Senior Centers

Suwon City Provides 2 Million KRW Support for Asbestos Removal Costs in Daycare Centers and Senior Centers Suwon City Hall

The city of Suwon in Gyeonggi Province will provide up to 2 million KRW to cover the costs of asbestos removal and dismantling at daycare centers and senior citizen centers.

In accordance with the 'Asbestos Safety Management Act,' Suwon City announced that it will support up to 2 million KRW per facility for asbestos removal and dismantling costs at facilities used by vulnerable groups such as daycare centers and senior citizen centers within its jurisdiction, with applications accepted starting from the 13th.

However, facilities that have already received partial or full support for asbestos removal and dismantling costs under other laws or ordinances are excluded.

Applications can be submitted by the facility owners through the Suwon City website.

Selected facility owners must commission asbestos removal and dismantling work from companies registered with the Ministry of Employment and Labor, complete the work within two months, and then visit the Suwon City Environmental Policy Division to apply for the subsidy. Suwon City will verify the completion of the asbestos removal and dismantling work on-site before disbursing the subsidy.

Asbestos was popular as an interior and exterior building material in the 1990s due to its excellent insulation, heat resistance, and affordability, but its use was completely banned from 2009 after it was found to cause malignant diseases such as lung cancer.

The World Health Organization (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified asbestos as a Group 1 carcinogen.
