According to Daejeon City and the fire authorities on the 13th, a fire occurred at the Hankook Tire factory in Moksang-dong, Daedeok-gu, Daejeon City, at around 10:09 PM the previous day.
The fire authorities estimate that the fire started near the curing process area located in the center of the northern 2nd factory of the Daejeon plant, which is divided into the 1st and 2nd factories running north to south. The fire spread to both sides and expanded to the logistics building and raw material factory of the 2nd factory.
The logistics building of the 2nd factory stores hundreds of thousands of products, and it has been confirmed that most of the 2nd factory was completely burned down.
Currently, 103 pieces of equipment and 431 firefighters are deployed at the scene conducting firefighting operations. A large-capacity water cannon vehicle from Ulsan has also been requested for support.
Strong winds at the fire site caused flames and smoke to spread to nearby areas, prompting residents of large apartment complexes nearby to evacuate.
There are about 2,300 apartment households near the fire site, and the city and fire authorities sent disaster safety messages to evacuate residents.
Due to the fire, highway and railway traffic passing through this section were also suspended. However, as the flames have subsided, the highway was reopened at 5:20 AM, and the railway resumed normal operation from 6:27 AM.
Earlier, the Daejeon branch of Korea Expressway Corporation controlled vehicle entry at Sintanjin IC on the upward Seoul-bound lane of the Gyeongbu Expressway and at Namcheongju IC on the downward Busan-bound lane at around 10:52 PM the previous day.
Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) also rerouted train operations on the Gyeongbu Line upward at Daejeon and downward at Osong Station at around 11:20 PM the previous day.
