Study on Daegu's Ultra-Low Birthrate Response Strategies through Benchmarking

The Daegu City Council member research group, ‘Saesidae Hope Forum (Representative Councilor Hwang Sun-ja),’ is conducting a research project to explore measures to overcome low birth rates.

The forum held a policy research service report meeting at the City Council on the 10th.

Saesidae Hope Forum is a Daegu City Council member research group formed in September last year by 12 council members to study local policies such as youth policy, population policy, low birth rate resolution policy, and local job policies, aiming to create a social environment for future generations.

Finding Ways to Overcome Low Birth Rates... Daegu City Council's 'New Era Hope Forum' Report Meeting On the 10th, Daegu City Council members of the New Era Hope Forum gathered at the policy research service report meeting on countermeasures for ultra-low birth rates, raising their voices in unison with a cheer of "Fighting."

Councilors Hwang Sun-ja, Lee Seong-o, Kim Dae-hyun, Lee Jae-sook, Ha Jung-hwan, Jeong Il-gyun, Kim Jae-yong, Yoon Kwon-geun, Kim Jeong-ok, Park So-young, and Yuk Jeong-mi attended the report meeting, along with about 20 others including Jeong Young-tae, team leader of the Daegu City Happiness Promotion Social Service Institute, who is conducting the research, and the research team.

Jeong Young-tae, the research director, pointed out, “Despite the government’s policy establishment and efforts to overcome low birth rates and aging for 20 years since 2003, the total fertility rate nationwide was 0.88 in 2021, recording one of the lowest birth rates in the world.”

Team leader Jeong said, “This policy research will approach the causes of low birth rates not from a traditional perspective but focusing on changes in social culture and values, aiming to prepare countermeasures to reduce the ultra-low birth rate problem in the Daegu area.”

Forum representative Councilor Hwang Sun-ja said, “We intend to create an opportunity to shift the paradigm of government-led childbirth promotion policies to policies at the local level,” adding, “We will reflect diverse opinions to propose effective policies that can respond to low birth rates and population outflow.”
