A Man in His 50s Who Smashed a Mercedes with a Hammer Also Attacked the Police Substation

Busan District Prosecutors' Office Indicts and Detains on Charges Including Special Property Damage
Repeated 'Random Crimes' Committed by Habitual Drunkard

A man in his 50s who, while intoxicated, smashed someone else's luxury car with a hammer, leaving it in ruins, was later revealed to have caused a disturbance by attacking a police precinct just five days after the incident.

According to Yonhap News on the 10th, the Busan Western District Prosecutors' Office indicted the man, identified as A, in his 50s, on charges of special property damage and special damage to public property. On the afternoon of the 28th of last month, around 3:20 PM, A visited a police precinct in Sasang-gu, Busan, while intoxicated and broke the entrance door and windows with a sledgehammer. Known as a habitual drunkard, he reportedly committed the crime out of dissatisfaction with frequent conflicts with the police. Fortunately, no casualties occurred, and the police arrested A at the scene.

Prior to this incident, five days earlier, A was booked by the police for severely damaging a Mercedes-Benz passenger car owned by someone else. On the 23rd of last month, he repeatedly struck a Mercedes-Benz worth approximately 160 million KRW with a hammer in a residential parking lot in Sasang-gu, Busan. The publicly released photos showed the car severely damaged, with holes all over the front and rear glass, and dents on the hood and trunk. The car was nicknamed the "Beehive Benz" online, where the photos were widely shared.

Due to the severe damage to the vehicle, early reports of the incident were distorted, claiming that the Mercedes-Benz was illegally parked in a resident-priority parking lot and was punished for it, but this was later proven false.

Police investigations revealed that the parking lot where the damaged vehicle was parked is a public parking space during the day and is used as a resident-priority parking lot after evening hours. A reportedly stated to the police, "I was upset that such an expensive car was in my neighborhood, so I committed the crime." The repair costs for the vehicle, which had holes all over like a beehive, are estimated to reach 86 million KRW.

A prosecutor stated, "A committed a 'random attack' without any acquaintance with the car owner and continued his disruptive behavior at the police precinct for the same reason," adding, "We will respond strictly to similar types of crimes in the future."
