A man in his 60s was caught by the Coast Guard for illegally harvesting seafood using diving equipment.

According to the Changwon Maritime Police Station in Gyeongnam on the 10th, the man wore skin scuba gear and entered the sea near Gusan-myeon, Masanhappo-gu, Changwon City at around 11 a.m. on the 7th, illegally capturing and harvesting about 20 kg of pen shells.

The Coast Guard apprehended the man on-site on charges of violating the Fisheries Resources Management Act during maritime criminal activities related to illegal skin scuba fishing, and immediately released the confiscated illegal catch back into the sea.

On the 1st, two men were caught for capturing and harvesting about 60 kg of pen shells using the same method.

A Changwon Coast Guard official said, “We will strengthen focused crackdowns on illegal harvesting by forming a dedicated task force to crack down on chronic and localized illegal skin scuba fishing in the local community.”
